I watched an episode of "The Inspector Lynley Mysteries" on television yesterday night. Although the series, which is based on the novels by Elisabeth George, is already running since a few weeks, it's only the first time I got around to actually watching it.
Now I've been a huge fan of the novels by Elisabeth George since I discovered them some ten years ago. I have all her novels, and even managed to read about half of them. They struck me as well written, well plotted, and also psychologically interesting. So I wondered how those rather thick books (several hundred pages) could be turned into a 90-minute episode each.
The one I saw yesterday, "In the Presence of the Enemy", was not a good test case as I didn't read the book yet. But as episodes in a British crime serials go, it was well made. I cannot tell from this single episode if it is up to the standard of some other favourites like Morse, A Touch of Frost, Dalziel & Pascoe or Silent Witness, but it looks promising. Which means I'll probably try to watch a few more in the coming weeks (not evident in the light of my current very light TV diet...)
